What to Wear for Your First Personal Training Session

Your first personal training session is a chance to get comfortable, discuss your goals and learn how your trainer works. You don't need a new wardrobe to get started. Choose clothes and shoes that let you move comfortably.

Choose Clothes You Can Move In

A comfortable T-shirt or training top with shorts, leggings or joggers is a good starting point. Before you leave, try a few easy movements in your outfit: reach overhead, bend and sit down. Check that nothing pinches, rides up or needs constant adjusting.

If you tend to get warm, choose a lightweight, breathable top. Avoid loose straps or accessories that could catch on equipment, and choose a fit that lets your trainer see your movement.

Bring a Light Layer

A hoodie or light jacket can help you stay comfortable on the way to your session and while you settle in. Wear a layer that's easy to remove when you warm up.

Ask About Footwear

Bring clean, secure-fitting athletic shoes suitable for the facility. The best choice will depend on the movements in your session, so ask your trainer if you are unsure. Let them know if you use orthotics or have footwear requirements.

Keep Hats and Accessories Optional

If you like training in a cap, choose one that stays secure and doesn't obstruct your view. Take it off if it gets in the way during an exercise. A hat or beanie is useful for the trip to an outdoor session, but it isn't a requirement for training.

Pack the Basics

  • A water bottle.
  • A small towel if your facility asks you to bring one.
  • A light layer and any required indoor shoes.
  • Your questions and a few notes about what you want to work towards.

Check your booking confirmation for anything specific to your location or session.
